TELUS Digital — Complete Vendor Guide

The one-line version

If you want to work in AI data — from "no experience needed" ad-rating tasks all the way up to PhD-level domain expert work — TELUS Digital's AI Community is one of the biggest doors into that world. It's not TELUS Digital's regular job board (that's a different, mostly employee-based site) — it's a separate freelance marketplace built specifically for this kind of work.

Who is TELUS Digital, really?

TELUS Digital started life in 2005–2006 as a strategic investment by TELUS (the Canadian telecom company) into Ambergris Solutions, a business process outsourcing company in the Philippines. It became "TELUS International" in 2007, went public on the Toronto and New York stock exchanges in 2021, and rebranded again to "TELUS Digital" in 2024. Today TELUS Digital is a large customer-experience and AI-data company, working with over 600 client brands. Its AI arm — TELUS Digital AI, run through the AI Community program — is a global network the company describes as having more than 1 million contributors. That's the part that matters for anyone reading this guide.

Important distinction, as a trainer I want you to get right the first time: TELUS Digital has TWO different career sites.

• jobs.telusdigital.com — regular, mostly full-time employee positions (contact center, digital delivery, etc.)
• telusinternational.ai/opportunities — the AI Community freelance marketplace, where the AI training/data/evaluation work lives.

You want the second one. Nearly everything below refers to that.

What kind of work is actually there?

At the time of this research, the AI Community board had a large number of open roles (the exact count changes daily — don't anchor to any specific number you read anywhere, including this article; check the live board). But the roles cluster into a few recognizable families:

1. Domain-Expert / PhD Data Partner — the top tier. You're writing advanced, original question-and-answer problem sets in your specialist subject (we sampled Architecture, but Math, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Medicine, and Mechanical Engineering all had open roles too) to help train AI reasoning ability. A PhD-level variant paid $12–$15/hr; a lower-credential "Data Partner" variant of the same family existed at a lower rate in the roles we checked. [Source: telusinternational.ai job posting #127131]

2. Prompt-Response Writing — you're writing prompts and detailed, well-structured responses in a specialist academic domain, to build datasets for visual/language AI models. Open to senior university students, TAs, and recent grads — not just PhDs. We saw $10/hr for the domain sampled. [Source: telusinternational.ai job posting #126596]

3. Ads & Search Quality Evaluation — this is the accessible end, and the one most beginner-friendly students ask me about. "Personalized Internet Ads Assessor" requires no previous professional experience — just strong English and Hindi (for the India-facing version), familiarity with Indian media/culture, and comfort using a computer and smartphone. Estimated pay was around $3.50/hr, task-based. [Source: telusinternational.ai job posting #128926]

4. Voice/Audio Data Collection and technical "AI Logic Specialist" roles exist too, at a wide range of pay ($6/hr up to $25/hr and beyond for technical roles), but we didn't open every listing in these families — treat specific requirements for these as unconfirmed until you check the live posting yourself.

Do I need to pass an exam?

Yes. Every single listing we opened in detail required some kind of qualification step — a subject-specific and/or language exam, plus ID verification. The good news: TELUS Digital says it provides guidelines and learning materials before the exam, and one listing explicitly called it "open book." This isn't a surprise pop quiz — it's closer to "study the guidelines, then demonstrate you understood them."

One practical trap to know about: at least one listing's terms explicitly said you can't apply to multiple similar roles at the same time — applying to one holds you out of the others in that family until it resolves. Don't spray applications across five similar roles hoping one sticks; pick the one you're most qualified for.

Is this a job or freelance work?

Freelance. Every AI Community role is a contractor engagement ("Contractor Agreement" is the actual term used), not employment. That means no fixed salary, no guaranteed hours in the traditional sense — pay is per hour or per task depending on the role, and availability windows vary (we saw everything from 5–40 hrs/week to 10–20 hrs/week depending on the specific listing).

Who is this actually good for?

• Complete beginners in India, comfortable in English and Hindi: the Ads Assessor family is your realistic entry point. No degree required, real (if modest) pay, and a genuine on-ramp into the AI-data-work world.
• University students or recent grads in a specific academic subject: Prompt-Response Writing pays meaningfully better ($10/hr) and doesn't require you to already have a PhD.
• PhD holders and deep subject experts: the Domain-Expert/PhD Data Partner family is where TELUS Digital pays the most for pure expertise, no coding or AI background required — just the ability to write rigorous, original problems in your field.

What we couldn't verify (and won't guess)

• TELUS Digital's own pages never state a headquarters address. Third-party business-data sites consistently say Vancouver, Canada — treat that as a reasonable but unconfirmed fact, not something to repeat as certain.
• Beyond the three roles we opened in full, the rest of the board (many more listings, spanning categories like Math, Science, Engineering, Medicine, Law, plus various voice/audio and technical specialist roles) has titles and often pay visible, but individual requirements weren't checked one-by-one. Don't assume every role in a family has identical requirements to the one example we detail here.
