The one-line version — and the most important thing to understand first

If you came looking for "Welocalize" because you want freelance AI data-annotation work, you actually want a brand called "Welo Data," not "Welocalize" itself. They're siblings under the same parent, but today they offer very different kinds of work. Get this distinction right before you spend an hour filling out an application for the wrong one.

The corporate structure, explained simply

Welocalize was founded in 1997 and is headquartered in New York City. Over nearly three decades it grew into "Welo Global," a holding company that now runs five separate brands:

• Welocalize — the original core brand: translation, localization, and linguist services.
• Adapt — international digital marketing.
• Park IP — intellectual property translation (patents, legal filings).
• Welo Life Sciences — regulated medical/pharmaceutical/clinical translation.
• Welo Data — AI training data collection and annotation. This is the one you want if you're a TTA Academy student looking for freelance AI-data work.

Here's the thing that trips people up: all five brands post their jobs on the same shared job board (jobs.lever.co/weloglobal), just under different department tags. If you don't filter correctly, you'll be looking at "Welocalize" department listings — which today are mostly full-time, on-site or hybrid employee positions for specific countries (we saw linguist and localization-QA roles across Europe, plus one Hindi Linguist role in Gurgaon, India that's hybrid, not remote) — and wonder why none of it looks like the flexible freelance work you expected.

What Welo Data (the freelance brand) actually offers

We opened two real, live Welo Data listings in full:

AI Data Annotator — French (Canada). Rating and annotation tasks per project guidelines, 15–20 hrs/week, freelance/independent contract, remote, 2-month initial term with possible extension. Requires full French-Canadian proficiency (ILR 5 / CEF C2 level) plus advanced English, and you have to sign an NDA. No pay figure was published on this listing at all.

Remote Data Annotator — Dutch. Researching and rating e-commerce data — evaluating how good product filters and search results are. Explicitly described as entry-level with training support provided — genuinely no experience required. Open to Dutch speakers in Suriname, India, Philippines, or Nigeria (an interesting eligibility list — it's about the language community, not one specific country). This one did publish a real number: $2.25/hour, based on tasks completed.

Don't extrapolate that $2.25/hr rate to every language or project — the listing itself says pay "may vary" by location, industry, and skill set, and we only have one confirmed data point.

Do I need to pass an exam?

The Dutch listing explicitly says your start date is "immediately after completing the qualification process" — so yes, something exists, though neither listing spells out exactly what form it takes (written test? sample task? training module?). Budget time for it either way.

A genuine discrepancy worth knowing about

Different official Welo Global sources state different scale numbers for the company, and they don't agree with each other:

• The main weloglobal.com homepage says 300+ languages, 2,000+ clients, 1,500+ corporate employees.
• Welo Data's own careers copy (as reported by a job-board aggregator) says 500,000+ expert evaluators across 105 countries.
• The boilerplate text at the bottom of the actual job postings themselves says "over 250 languages" and "a growing network of over 400,000 in-country linguistic resources."

None of these three are the same claim measured differently — they're just inconsistent. We're not picking one as "the real number." If you're citing a stat about this company anywhere, cite the specific source, not "Welocalize says."

Who is this actually good for?

• Complete beginners looking for entry-level, no-experience annotation work: the Welo Data "Data Annotator" family (like the Dutch example) is a genuine on-ramp, with training support built in.
• Bilingual speakers of a less-common European or regional language, since eligibility on Welo Data listings tends to be defined by language community rather than a single country.
• NOT a good fit if you're looking for remote freelance work under the "Welocalize" brand name itself — that side of the business today is mostly full-time employment in specific countries.

What we couldn't verify (and won't guess)

• Exact pay for the French-Canadian Welo Data listing — not published.
• The precise format of the "qualification process" mentioned on the Dutch listing.
• Whether $2.25/hr is representative of Welo Data pay generally, or specific to that one project/language.
