Most rejections at this stage aren't about your skill level — they're about a resume that doesn't match what the vendor's applicant-tracking system, or the human reviewing it, is actually scanning for.
Don't write one resume for every application. A resume aimed at TELUS Digital's PhD Data Partner role and one aimed at a beginner-friendly ads-rating role should not look the same — different sections should be emphasized.
If the project mentions "data annotation," "search quality rating," or "RLHF," use those exact terms where they genuinely apply to your background — don't force keywords that don't reflect real experience.
Avoid tables, text boxes, columns, and graphics in the version you submit through an online application form — many applicant-tracking systems parse these incorrectly and drop your content entirely.
Freelance micro-tasks, prior annotation work, content moderation, or even structured academic research count as relevant experience for most of these roles — list it specifically, don't bury it.
