Once matched to a project, most Handshake AI fellows go through a project-specific Assessment during onboarding. Here's exactly what Handshake AI's own Help Center says about it.

What Assessments Are

Evaluations used to confirm you have the knowledge and skills needed to contribute to a specific project. They're project-specific — format, length, and passing criteria vary depending on the partner lab your project works with.

Types of Assessments

You might encounter a knowledge quiz based on your onboarding training materials, a practice task or sample submission reviewed by the Handshake AI team, or a written or skills-based evaluation relevant to your project's domain.

Grading & Results

There's typically a processing period before you get results — Handshake AI's own guidance says this is normal and shouldn't cause concern.

If You Don't Pass

You can't typically continue with that specific project, but this does not disqualify you from the Handshake AI Fellowship overall. Retake availability is decided per project and isn't guaranteed — retakes are generally only considered for a documented error or technical issue.
