Read guideWhat Is the Handshake AI Fellowship?
The Handshake AI Fellowship is a paid, remote program where fellows apply professional or academic judgment to create AI training content and evaluate AI-generated responses for accuracy and quality — working with what the program describes as leading AI research labs. The Fellowship states it has paid over $100M to more than 100,000 fellows to date.
Who Runs It
Handshake AI Fellowship is a program of Handshake Inc. — the same company behind the well-known Handshake career platform used by 1,600+ colleges and universities. Handshake was founded in 2014 by Garrett Lord, Ben Christensen, and Scott Ringwelski, originally Michigan Tech computer science students, and is headquartered in San Francisco.
Eligibility — The Rule That Matters Most
What the Work Involves
Entry-level roles like AI Trainer (someone who helps improve AI by reviewing or creating training data) - Generalist require no AI experience — just strong attention to detail and the ability to follow instructions accurately, open to all majors. More specialized roles target professionals and graduate-level domain experts (named examples include chemistry, philosophy, and software development).
Pay
The Generalist AI Trainer role states 'up to $30/hr, depending on the project.' The Fellowship's general marketing page separately references pay up to $100–$125/hr for specialized, graduate-level roles. Both figures are official; we don't reconcile them into one number since they describe different roles.
How to Apply
Create an account at joinhandshake.com/ai/, verify your identity, and complete your profile. Matching is rolling — there's no fixed timeline for receiving a project invitation.
Final Thoughts
Handshake AI is a real, verifiable program from an established company — but its US work-authorization requirement is a hard gate, not a soft preference. Confirm your eligibility (the specific rules that decide who is allowed to apply) before investing time in the application.
